Madeleine Colani Street
One of Southeast Asia's pioneering archaeologists gets a street named after her in northern Vietnam
The city of Hòa Bình is best known in Southeast Asian Archaeology for the Hoabinhian culture, a lithic techno-complex of prehistoric sites first identified by Madeleine Colani (1866-1943) of the EFEO. Last week, I happened to be in Hòa Bình for some fieldwork and I could not pass the chance to visit Madeleine Colani Street, newly-named in her honour.
