Welcome to the May edition of The Rojak! Perhaps you, like many in Southeast Asia and around the world are enjoying a well-deserved break this Labour Day. Here’s some holiday reading, an assortment of articles uncovered during my daily sorting of the news that doesn’t quite fit the main page, but are worth looking at anyway.
We are experiencing scorching hot weather across the region this month, which means it’s time for submerged landscapes to make a reappearance, such as a centuries-old ruins emerging from beneath a drought-lowered lake in the Philippines. Meanwhile, in the bustling modernity of Singapore, descendants of ancient seafarers are stirring up the past through culinary traditions, reconnecting with their maritime heritage.
